THE PUP-UP // LOS ANGELES RECAP

November 20, 2013

And so, the first-ever Pup-Up event was a smashing success! From the amazing studio and delicious treats, to the lovely owners and stupendous dog models, The Pup-Up, Los Angeles was absolute perfection!

I thought I’d share a few select photos from the event and give you a taste of what 20 owners, 16 dogs and one photographer (me) experienced that day…

I could not have asked for a better location than Cherry Soda Studios in Eagle Rock. The owner, Lee, was an absolute delight to work with and was incredibly helpful getting me acquainted with working in a studio setting – my first time. And I was blessed with an awesome group of dream clients (both human and canine). Although some of the pups got a bit confused with the deceiving astro turf covering, I’m happy to report their were no major incidents or accidents. I was very proud of this pack of pooches!

As this was my first studio shoot, I decided to create a couple of different settings for owners and pups to choose from. I photographed with the traditional white backdrop, a more whimsical decorative option, and then offered a fun costume selection if your pup felt like hamming it up for the camera – which believe it or not, many did!

I’ll be honest when I say that I was completely nervous heading into this event. While I’d photographed my pup incessantly and several of my friends’ in the past, taking the portrait of complete “stranger” pups can be a little unnerving.

They fidget. They play. They bark. They sniff. They shake. They pounce. They drool. And…above all…they just don’t understand what you’re doing.

So to say it was a challenge is playing it cool…and cool is what I was forced to play. But boy did I love every minute of it.

When you capture the image of pup, you truly capture their very essence. They don’t know how to present anything other than themselves when you snap a photo, so it’s always a moment of sincere personality and genuine feeling when that image appears. It’s a beautiful thing and I’m so honored that I got to spend the day with such loving owners and magical dogs, capturing their most true selves.

I want to give the biggest and most grateful shout-out to all of the amazing sponsors, without whom, this event would not have been half as special.

I walked away from this first event in a cloud of  pure euphoria, so glad to have shared this day with so many wonderful dog-lovers and their beautiful pets. I can’t wait to head out on the road to meet the next group of pups and owners and capture some more fuzzy moments.
