PERSONAL NOTE // FINDING YOUR NICHE

pensive Harvey

Hey all…I apologize for the lack of posting, but “swamped” doesn’t even begin to define how I have felt this week.  I’ve wished for a Friday every day.  Speaking of, is it Friday yet?

I thought today might be a good day as any to share a thought that has been bouncing around my head.  I have had the honor and privilege of being embedded in the blogger world for more than four years now (through my own projects and working with some other AMAZING blogs).  And throughout these past four years, I have noticed a bevy (more like a deluge) of new blogs popping up–some with a unique point of view and thoughtful postings and others, well, not so much.

I truly feel like there is a space for everyone on the web…truly…everyone.  But as of late, I have been thinking about how one can really go about finding their niche, showcasing their personal point of view, and not be covered by the shadows of others.  It is a VERY hard process, one I am figuring out on the daily.

As a creative individual since birth (I thought I was going to be the future of PIXAR at the age of 9), I know that there is this constant inner-struggle to present yourself as the most unique thinker, with the most original ideas (or maybe that is just me).  I struggle with being different enough and noteworthy enough that at times, I forget how to just be me.  My House of Harvey experience has been such a true joy for me and game changer because, for once, I put aside all of the inner-stuggles of wanting to be this avant-garde, stylish, mold-breaking, innovator of the blogoshphere and decided to just be me and focus on the things I enjoy most: dogs + design.

The experience has been truly liberating and I have all of you to thank for that.  You have not only been encouraging, but have been uplifting and reassuring that there really is a home for everyone in the blogosphere.  They may be built differently, painted different colors, and house different families (human and other), but the blog neighborhood is always growing and welcoming new members.

So moral of this story: don’t let your inner-fear or the appearance of competition scare you off from speaking your truth and passion.  Just do what you do best and stay honest to your voice.  There is room for all.

Thanks y’all.  Mr. Harvey and I are so blessed to have you at our house.

xo Steph

very well said! I can completely understand what you are saying, as I think the same things, but you are so right in saying just to focus on what you love and forget trying to stand out, because I think when you do that… then you become your best and you will shine bright I love your blog!

I totally agree that the best blogs out there really reflect their writers.
I try to blog for me everyday – and only post what I love and am passionate about it too.

P.S. dogs + design is my most favorite subject too :)

Great post Steph! I went through the exact same thought process last year
(http://prettyfluffy.com/2011/09/what’s-your-niche/) and I totally agree with you. There’s nothing like following your passion, because the moment people see the real excitement and creativity you have for things you really love, they respond – it’s infectious!
There’s only one you, so there’s nothing better than sharing that with the world.
