Austin Puppy Love | House of Harvey

I’m writing to you from Austin today!  I’ll be back to regular posting tomorrow, but I just wanted to share some furry friends I’ve met here in the Austin area.

Austin Puppy Love | House of Harvey

Dogs truly run the land out here in this capital city, and boy do I love it.  From hiking to river-side dog parks, dogs are cherished and loved in Austin.  Makes my heart happy.  Mr. Harvey will surely have to join me next time.

I hope you have a lovely President’s Day!

Steph

House of Harvey Valentine's Day

It’s the day of love. The day where we make it a point to say “I love/like/adore/fancy you” to those special people in our lives.

House of Harvey Valentine's Day

This year, I can’t help but consider my pup and the two and a half blissful years we have spent together.  What a joy the unconditional love of a pup brings to you.  So this Valentine’s Day, I wish you all sweet, sincere puppy love.  May we all get to experience it at least once in our lives.

House of Harvey for Quarterly Co.

When it comes to pet-owning, I don’t think much else tops it.  There is just something so undeniably special about being able to bond with your dog like no one else ever will.  Different anatomy. Different language.  Different species. Different view of life.  And yet, a shared love. It’s a beautiful and magical thing.

Some may deny that they are “true” members of your family, but I will never think of my pup as anything but.  And as part of my family, and more specifically my lifestyle, I choose to give my Mr. Harvey a well-designed life.

We are so lucky to have a bevy of choices and selections when it comes to our pets.  There are countless amazing products available for dogs and dog-lovers alike,  and I thoroughly enjoy sharing with you my personal favorites and interesting discoveries right here on this blog.  Whether through Pinterest, blog posts, or giveaways, I love connecting design savvy dog owners with design savvy products!

J. Timbonelake Suit and Tie | House of Harvey

We all know that Mr. Harvey has a swagger all his own. So when he was asked to be in The Pet Collective’s parody of Justin Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie” promo video, naturally it was a fit.  I may be biased (never!), but I don’t think I’ve seen a suit and tie look this good in a very long time.  So very proud of my little music mogul.

I hope you guys enjoy the video!

How fantastic is this “dogs as fonts” graphic by Grafisches Buro?  It symbolizes the perfect mash up of some of my favorite things: dogs and type.  I love when that happens!

I think that Mr. Harvey’s Sharperrier mutt-breed is a clean, narrow weight sans-serif for sure!

Do you agree with the typeface chosen for each breed?

Rescue Dogs of Detroit | House of Harvey

I’m always so excited when I receive emails from readers sharing pictures of their precious pups or their own rescue stories.  It really warms my heart and brightens my day.  So when I received an email from photographer Lisa Cervone detailing her portrait series of rescue dogs in the Detroit area, I was most totally captured.

Like with all great dog photography, I love how Lisa has captured to true emotions behind these voiceless pups and really share their beautiful personalities.  And with this project specifically, I love reading the rescue stories detailed in the descriptions.  Such a lovely end to a lovely project.

Here is a bit more about the project from the photographer, Lisa Cervone:

Why did you decide to start this project?

I am a portrait photographer and wanted to create my own project last year when work was slow. I decided to shoot dogs, something near and dear to my heart. I found a fairly young rescue league in Michigan called the Detroit Dog Rescue, which is looking to become the first no-kill shelter in Detroit. Naturally, I offered to take images for a gallery show and have the proceeds go to their non-profit.

How did you chose the dogs you photographed?

The group enters the worst parts of the city to retrieve dogs that were involved in drug raids and dog fighting rings, as well as those who have been shot, stabbed, and abandoned on the streets. Most of the dogs I photographed were pit bulls or pit mixes that truly were the sweetest, most gentle animals I had ever come in contact with.

What was the inspiration for your photo style?

There are many photographers that shoot rescue dogs in a graphic light which is very important, but I wanted to shoot them like I shoot my humans: simply, beautifully and honest. Behind each picture lies such horrific stories, and my favorite still to this day is a dog named Mellow, a brown and white pit mix that was shot various times and missing an eye. The image is quite somber, but it’s beautiful to know he is in a much better place because of human compassion and kindness.

Where can we find your work?

Most of my images are on Etsy and printed on fine art paper. I hope to continue more projects in the future relating to our four-legged friends.

Thank you Lisa for sharing your beautiful work and story with us.

The Pets of Downtown Abbey

We all know I am a big fan of Downton Abbey. But maybe I am not as big of a fan as the amazing artist Toadbriar, who so magically captured the Downton cast in these pet portraits.  Could Mrs. Patmore and the Dowager Countess be more uncanny?

I think I definitely need one of these for my office….or maybe the whole set….

You can see the full set and buy one of your own right HERE.

House of Harvey winter hikeWinter is not very much like winter here in Los Angeles.  Temps may get down to a miserable 50 (note the sarcasm) during the last few months of the year, but they typically rise back up to their normal 60s/70s before you can say Happy Valentine’s Day.

While I do love the constant sun and brightness, I could really go from some snow from time to time.  Until then, me and Mr. Harvey will just have to take in some of the sunny winter hiking and just deal.
